Not sure what to say paul other than sometimes less is more.Also not sure what lens or settings you used,or how much you have cropped these.In the first one as an example you have a very shallow depth of field,under the beak is in focus but the most important bit(The eye) is clearly not.If you had nailed that then it would have given the shot a lot more visual impact.The other two are also suffering due to focusing.If you are not aware then take a look at this http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html at the very least when you go out shooting you need to have a basic understanding of how your lens,distance from subject and aperture will effect the outcome.
