Using LED and or mobile phone photography

On Saturday I saw (no web presence sadly) some really good photos taken with a mobile phone (iPhone 6) , close up lens and led for illumination.
The subjects were on the bigger side e.g. butterflies, I can't remember now what the smallest size was now.
Has anyone tried either using a mobile or a led for illumination instead of a flash.
I have used a torch once and it worked ok (can't find the photo now).
 
Yes, used some lightweight LED lights to add some light in a dark wooded area shooting Fungi the other week, the benefit with decent LED lighting is its daylight balanced, whilst you'll still need a long-ish exposure if your on a tripod, it doesn't matter anyway.
 
Thanks for that, I think in this case the exposure times were less than 1 second (not long).
