What an obliging little fellow he was

:agree: to my limited experience of seeing them it looks like a Male Stonechat to me as well :)

Just for reference I found this BTO video guide......to illustrate the differences between the Stonechat, Winchat & Wheatear

Of note they say this adjacent to video on their website:-
This identification video looks at Whinchat, Stonechat and Wheatear. These three birds are not too difficult to separate in breeding male plumage, but a lot harder in female and juvenile. Check out our tips to help here

Thank you for your responses. I'm fairly new to bird photography and I've discovered that taking the picture, whilst not easy, isn't as hard as actually identifying them. Thank you Box Brownie for your detailed reply - that must have taken a while to put together. In terms of the "learning curve" I realize that I'm way out on the outer edge!!

Just been looking at your Flickr Norm, you have some very nice shots of a 'buzzard'.......... its a female Marsh Harrier (y)

It's a lovely image, nonetheless.

I popped over to your Flickr too, some exceptional work you have there.

Very nice shot, good pose & colour with some fine detail.

George.
