Don't you know or is it another quiz? I'd have said Sparrow Hawk or Kestrel. Difficult to tell from the range.

I don`t know..............:D

Way bigger than a Kes, when I first spotted it I thought it was a buzzard, similar size...........

I think it was either a hen harrier or a montagus harrier.

Yeh, if it's that big could be a Harrier. It's deffo not a Buzzard. We have Hen Harriers up here but I've not seen one. We don't have Montagues.

The plot thickens then Ian, I originally thought Buzzard, that size, but then I saw the tail and thought not.

Confusion reigns.................:D

Would it help if I posted the uncropped pic?

Merlin are smaller than kestral....what kind of habitat was it?? Might even be a hobby...

All i can say for definite is its a Falco (something or other) and none of them are as big as a Buzzard, it could be an immature bird with the colouration etc, it may even be a peregrine, but something doesnt feel right for that, not that im always right on these things ;)

Hmmm not sure, it looks almost like a Merlin ? but they arent Buzzard size

North west England Ian, we don`t get merlins, I think.

Here is the original shot.

Sorry guys, this was over woodland next to a river. It was nearly buzzard size, certainly bigger that the crows mobbing it.

Yep, it looks like a falcon, but i REALLY DON`T KNOW............

Ian, this was a large bird, bigger than a hobby, S/hawk or kes.

PS...............the KF`s were having a ball today..............(y)

Knowing my crap PP skills, could I e-mail the raw file to somebody more skilled than I, see if we can improve the image?

Just caught up on here OK Guys? :p

My initial thoughts are "Hobby"
Here is a size chart

Hobby
Length 30-36cm 12-14"
Wingspan 82-92cm 32-36"
Weight 130-340g 4-12oz
The Northern Hobby, or just Hobby,
is similar in size to kestrel, but has a shorter tail & long sickle-shaped

Merlin
Length: 9-11 in. (male); 11-12 in. (female)
Weight: 4.5-6.6 oz. (male); 6.4-8.3 oz. (female)
Wingspan: 21-23 in. (male); 24-27 in. (female)

Is a shame you havent got one of it being mobbed ?

I`m really sorry and shall try better in future....................

Its a crap picture ( sorry Ade :D)
If your size is accurate ( as big as a Buzzard) the only other thing it could be is a female Gos hawk

edit just seen your link Ian (y)

And where have you been?...............:D

Way bigger Chris, much larger than a kes.

Ouch, you know how sensitive I am , are the legs the right colour?

And where have you been?...............:D

 :D
Then the only other thing it can be is an Accipiter gentilis
They can look rather like "falco" in flight

Ah well, I`ll sleep on it. Have a rethink and research in the morning......:wacky:

I think you will find its a Goshawk, probably female or Juvenile mate :) still quite rare catch if it is one :)

These are Marsh Harriers, but they are all pretty much the same, wings like Buzzards with the fingers and much broader

Female Marsh harrier (not great pics but was miles away lol)

Montagus Harrier (even further away and really hazy day)

Cheers bud, your probably right. Later...........sack time for me.

Agreed on both counts (y)
I didn't think it was a "harrier" but I really haven't seen many at all
( except a few marshes as you know,)
So I will have to bow to your knowledge on those Ian (y)

Hi, i took the liberty of putting the image on a falconry site and asked for an ID.
No one could ID it with certainty, but it seems that it's definately a Falcon and not a Hawk, and the favourite is an escaped Hybrid.
It was suggested that it may be a juvenile of some sort which would make it difficult to ID.

that's about as good as it gets, sorry !

Keith.

Thanks Keith.........(y)

Kestrel was my first thought,so i will stick with that.

Best from mike.

Don't suppose it's a Honey Buzzard ???
