I did know what it was; I was trying to be clever and see if anyone else did, especially as they are not in the UK. They didn't seem to mind my presence whilst they were collecting mud, I must look for their nest.

It's a wasp of some variety or another.

Dolichovespula genus

or vespula genus?

Some sort of parasitic wasp methinks!
