Your most adverse condition here is the backlit situation.
It generates the highlights on the water and black Goshi
is in its own shade.

This sums up to an extended dynamic range the can chal-
lenge most cameras and shooters alike.

Add to that that maybe your sensor and software were pos-
sibly not designed to handle such DR and you have the per-
fect recipe for disastrous results.

The solutions are multiple.

  1. Change your position to the light source
  2. use lighting support — flash or reflector
  3. use EV compensation
  4. work with gear that can better cope with such situations.
A combination of these is the way to go.

Yes undoubtedly a difficult shot to get totally right.

~2 works well for me, the texture of the water is interesting.

I reckon that perfect shots are either difficult or lucky, this set works quite well with the highlight problems acknowledged. But the story is interesting, At first I thought it was a dog, as I thought cats had an aversion to water. Thus the story makes up for the lack of perfection.....but ~2 works well anyway.........IMHO

make of these what you will! C&C alwys welcome.
A damned good try Fi (y)
Its always difficult getting a focus lock on a black animal, notwithstanding the fact that its bright sunlight isn't it?
Not the easiest of subjects by any means.
Lovely detail in #4 & particularly #5
