Quite a few on a bush in the garden ......... about 4 or 5 foot from the ground

Is something interesting going to crawl out of it

My first thought was that it it's the remains of one of these:

A Staghorn Sumac fruit, but to be honest I've no idea....
 
just been back

they are in a wild rose bush

some kind of over wondering wasp - rose bedeguar gall - gall wasp?
