I’ve lived here for 25 years and never seen this before. Sunset was six hours ago, this is looking west out towards the peak district, there are no towns or villages that could cause this, the next heavily populated area is Manchester, about 40 miles away.

Given the right atmospheric conditions, I would say it was the lights of Manchester reflected off moderately low cloud.
 
I live in Edinburgh amd we can sometimes see a similar thing on the north side of the river Forth. Turns out it's the petrochemical plant gas flaring.
Is there anything like that westbound of your position that could be the same thing?

there's nothing between here and Manchester but the Peak District national park
