Your timing is off on both of these, especially the latter. Better to wait until the player has either caught the ball, or is close to catching it. The first pic would have been great in another quarter of a second
Shooting from the stands? Trying to be helpful, if you want to shoot rugby, my advice is get to a local amateur club, get permission (from the club!) to go pitch side, and have a crack from there.
I agree with Steven, pitch side would benefit hugely here, opens up a whole host of better photo opportunities and invites the viewers into the action better. Local clubs welcome photo coverage, provided you approach them correctly and politely
