Your shots with the Raynox DCR250

Blimey!! I really didn't expect this thread to be so successful when I started it.

It's fantastic to see it's still going very strong, with some superb images being displayed (y)

The help that's being given by the more experienced is great to see, embodying the spirit of TP in these times where we have warnings about troll behaviour as a header when we log in. Excellent stuff :)

That's a corker Walter (y)

Here's a few I've taken recently.

7D c/w the 55-250mm 1/250s F22 ISO400 on camera flash at -2 and a third, no diffuser.

Has anyone used a Raynox with a 55-200mm VR Nikon lens? And if so does anyone have any examples?

Thanks :)

Can anyone give me some advice using the DCR-250 with my FZ28. I need to know what settings to use, I can't seem to get it in focus. Thanks.

Got mine last week, I love it.

DOF can be a pain in the neck though.

Really love the colours on No.3! Great set.

Here is one I took a few months back for a photo comp at work called 'Hidden Details' This was taken with Raynox (can't remember if it was 150 or 250) on LX5. PP'd to convert to black and white and add grain

Is this ok to use with a Canon 550D and a nifty fifty/18-55mm kit lens and/or the 70-300mm standard Canon telezoom lens?

Quite fancy a cheap go at macro.

Some shots taken in the garden over the last couple of days

This globular springtail is about 2mm long so this gives you an idea of how shallow the focus is!

I'm thinking of getting a 150 as well, has anyone tried stacking the 250 + 150? Or would it be better to go for a cheapish set of tubes? The main reason I'm thinking of the 150 is for less magnification but I wouldn't mind trying to stack them :D

I think the 150 is a lovely add-on, but obviously it depends on what you like taking pictures of. For my purposes it has a nice working distance (about 6 inches), it is very easy to handle and provides suitable magnification for a lot of what I do.

Someone use to own, the 150, 250 and MSN202... not sure you can stack them though... I've added a 2xTC and a set of tubes to get more magnification with my 250. If I want less, I tend to use it with my 50mm

That might have been me. I use the Raynox 150, 250 and MSN-202, and the Canon 500D. I currently use them on a 45-175 lens on a Panasonic G3. Before that I used them (less the MSN-202) on a Canon SX10is.

I have tried stacking the 150 and 250. It works fine; you just need a 49 to 43 step down ring. To show the relative power of these lenses, this graph shows the scene widths covered by my achromats, including the 150+250 stacked, at various focal lengths from 45 to 175. As you can see from the graph in terms of magnification the 150+250 stacked fits comfortably between the 250 and the MSN-202; so does the working distance.

I only had the one session using the 150+250 stacked, to test out the combination, back in October, and there wasn't much around so I don't have much to show by way of 150+250 images. I haven't done much photography since then and have used the MSN-202 on the few occasions I wanted magnification beyond that of the 250. Using the 150+250 stacked is one of several things I hope to explore further in the Spring and Summer (assuming we have Spring and Summer this year, and that there are some subjects around - serious comment, see this for example.:().

As I understand it add-on lenses like the Raynox 150 and 250 work best with longer focal length lenses (while extension tubes work better with shorter focal lengths). So I imagine the 70-300 would be the one to use.

It's not directly comparable, because my G3 has a smaller sensor than your 550D, but when I use my 150 and 250 on a 45-200 or 45-175 lens it works nicely, with no vignetting. If I use them on my 14-42 lens I get vignetting apart from at and near 42mm. As the focal length decreases the vignetting gets really serious. Like this!

If my arithmetic is right, my 45-200 is roughly equivalent to 56-250 on your camera.

Zoom lenses are good with achromats like the 150 and 250 because you need to keep the camera at roughly the same distance from the subject and you use the zoom to alter the magnification (unlike prime macro lenses, where you change the magnification by moving towards or away from the subject).

I hope Raynox 150 shots are ok here, because I don't keep track of which add-on lens I use for each shot.

These were captured at a local nature reserve early one morning in June last year.

The Raynox 250 works very well with the 18-55 kit, I actually had a fair bit of vignetting using the 55-250 with it (the 70-300 being a similar size might do so as well).

Not my best example (I was experimenting with DOF and it's the only one left on my iPad presently) but this is with the kit lens.

thanks for any suggestions

So... I eagerly unwrapped my DCR-250 last night and had a quick play for 5 mins... seemed fairly easy.

This afternoon I had the opportunity for a proper play session in the garden - jeez! I was not prepared for how difficult macro shots are - the amazingly small DoF is incredible, and focusing on a windy day like today is a real bugger! Perhaps time to spend yet more money on some macro rails!

Anyway - here's the two shots I'm happiest with!

Oh yes - it's definitely fun. It also seems to eat up vast amounts of time...

Anyway here's a couple more - not too happy with these, not much light yesterday, so I had to bump the ISO up! (I may have to look at a clever flash ring or something!)

Just picked up the 250, keen to have a play, this thread doesn't seem to be as busy these days :)

I've had a little play with mine on my Tamron 90mm but I'm finding it really hard. On a normal lens I can nail the shot pretty frequently but for some reason with this lens I'm really struggling!

I find it very difficult to use, probably as I do it handheld with no other light source. I guess my keeper rate is in low single figures

Of course, I might just be being over critical and the shot / detail that I want isn't achievable with the raynox.

going by the flickr owners page, its more than capable of some amazing shots so i'm looking forward to having a crack with it, got my monopod at the ready and ordered a tripod today too :)

what diffuser are you using, Gary ? I think thats my downfall ( i see the bluebottle is at f29 ! )

Wow...look at the price of that ;) hmm..now I'm torn between that and one for my sb-400

i was going to bosh a stofen on my SB700 and see what happens :x
