Well it's clearly under-exposed.
Your shutter speed of 1/200 and aperture of f9 could be okay if there was sufficient light (unlikely indoors unaided).
Exif appears to show a flash was used ... did it actually fire??
Did you have any other lighting?

Used Pixel King wireless remote flash trigger to Nikon SB900 speedlight, Not the built in camera flash, the light would have been in the wrong direction. taken in the garden My idea was to highlight the flower inside the head against a dark background, You can see in the exif file above when it was taken. also it shows "Flash: On, Return detected" so not direct flash; no doubt you saw this.

Assuming in daylight, even at ISO 64 I would expect better than that, can't believe that the flash worked ... did you see it flash?

With an SB900 maybe try a shutter speed of 1/125, Also the ISO could have been a little low but if the flash was synced okay I would expect a little more light on the flowers.

yes gramps. Did not want it glaring out so flash some distance away

Thanks Kenneth. This I have to say was more of experimenting with a new bit of kit. Do you think a bit more light would show the background more, ie the fence, which I wanted to avoid? No editing if I remember correctly was used apart from RAW to Jpeg for posting

D810 has flash sync settings available for 1/250 & 1/350 IIRC ... if it has 1/xxx* that will work variably.
Definitely not enough light ... flash not working, standing too far away, flash not working with TTL therefore not judging lens focal length properly.

Gramps the modelling preflash on the D810 (e5 in the menu) will work to set up the camera even though not using the built in flash. Just popped out to check Taken Hand held

aperture settings are the control for flash with fixed output
the flash takes care of the speed side of things...1/10000 sec for instance
try larger apertures...

not too up to date on modern flash but i used a thyristor model which gave the settings on the back....old toady here
the main thing is that the flash will illuminate at a certain distance...the guide number...anything nearer or further will be poorly exposed
cant see how any super duper model can change this concept unless it takes more than one flash at differing settings to expose
a bit like bracketing...or several slave flashguns fired by the on camera flashgun

i would start again and use manual settings...set the speed at the correct synch speed and then do a few shots with successive apertures
ON A TRIPOD

gramps knows
