No
For my sins, I actually do like Jessops, and will support them where I can because it'd be a shame to see them dissapear. But yesterday I had to have a giggle. I headed into our Poole branch to ask about shoot-through brollies. And this is how it went:

Staff Member: Can I help you sir?

Me: I certainly hope so mate, I'm after a shoot-through umbrella.

SM: Right, I don't think they exist sir, you can only get umbrellas that you fire the strobe into and they reflect back.

Me: No, I know you can get them, they diffuse the flash.

SM: Do you mean a soft-box sir?

Me: No, I mean a diffuser umbrella.

SM: Give me a minute, (to Duty manager:) there's no such thing s diffuser brollies, is there?

DM: No, sorry sir, but they don't exist. We can order a softbox for you if you'd like.

Me: No thanks, I want a brollie.

DM: Can we order a silver brolly for you then?

Me: No thanks, I think I'll just ring WEX :D

They're usually OK over there, I think it must have been 'don't bring your brain to work' day

Yeah they are more specialist and harder to come by the shoot through umbrellas. Don't think the guy meant any harm by not knowing.

Of course not, I know that, that's why I'm laughing about it

Your loss, last time I bought some, the best value were the jessops branded ones. ;)

Haha, I've had that before, but the other way around.

A customer came in asking for something, and I was certain they didn't exist, and they were adamant that it did.

Waterproof Sony video camera, that's what it was.

They were like "i've seen it in your brochure", and I was like "No, you haven't, we don't sell them" because they were getting extremely arsey.
I got out the brochure and showed them a Sanyo one.

They apologised profusely for making the mistake and went bright red :p

tell you what poole is the only one in the area i would say are ok. Castle point are nice people but know absolutly nothing and bournemouth is the same....And the manager is an idiot

Don't get me started with Jessops

Went in one shop and they said that AA batteries in a D300 would last longer than the Nikon battery which you can also use.

They didn't know Polaroid had stopped making the film, so then it clicked thats why they hadn't had any for a while. Said that you can't get Polaroid backs for Meduim Format cameras, only the 600 film. Then they got there film guy to talk to me and to tell me that there is no such Polaroid film and that MF cameras only take 120.

A good set of AA rechargeables will run run close to, if not better, an EN-EL3e in a D300 ;)

I'd have been more than happy with that...if they'd acknowledged they existed

But you like my Jessops, don't you matt :)

Clearly the people as a majority in Jessops are idiots :p

and also, as flash said, what are you talking about?
Get some Energizer 2650mah AA's and they'll last twice as long in the D300! ;)

Just get a pack of 30 from the pound shop, they'll last a couple of hours...all 30 of them I mean.

Many it will last as long but just sounded a bit werid. Also seeing as though they are in the "game" to wouldn't they have said the more costly way :LOL:

Yea your Jessops is fine, it's just the rest of them really. Brighton's one is quite nice as it has loadsssssss of film in it as well :LOL:

Well, I'll soon have a mitt of Jessops vouchers to replace my 40D so hopefully they'll let me compare a 40d to a 50d

I agree he meant no harm in not knowing.
But just because you don't know something exists doesn't mean it doesn't exist (I know - no sh!t sherlock).
The more appropriate response would be along the lines of I didn't know such a thing exists, sorry - we don't sell them
That way you don't antagonise a customer by telling them they are wrong - fairly basic customer service IMO

But (This is priceless) never say something you actually sell doesn't exist.

This thread has made me chuckle a bit.

I would get one of the Calumet brollies, as it will work as a reflective one, then just remove the black cover and hey presto, it is also a shoot through one as well.

"but sir, you said shoot through, Translucent are completely different!" likely response?

Jessops staff are idiots! Ok, thats a generalization but still, 95% of them really are stupid!

Haha, this made me laugh. Only because I had a similar experience in Jessops in Oxford. It went like this;

Me: Hi there, I'm looking for a flash meter...

Them: You mean a flash gun?

Me: No, I mean a flash meter...

Them: Um, what's a flash meter?

Me: It's a piece of equipment you use to measure how much light is hitting your subject, from a flash or any other light source...

Them: Right. No, we wouldn't sell that kind of thing here!

Me: Your a camera shop, of course you would!

Them: No, sorry, can't help you.

Me: Can I speak to your manager please... (Manager comes along, I tell him the conversation).

Manager: We don't have any in stock.

And I thought the people in Oxford were meant to be intelligent! lol.

Interesting.

Just popped into my local Jessops to get a 50D to replace my broken 40D, body only.

First box comes out and it's not sealed.

"I'm not being funny but have you got one that's sealed"?

"No problem sir"

Box comes out, it's sealed with a circular clear tab, open it up, check the contents - lovely.

I've got to work, start going through my custom settings when I notice live view is enabled - it's disabled by default. Then I spot it's got a CF card in in - Jessops 4Gb 100x, with pictures from inside the store.

HUM...

Time to work out the picture count.

What i find funny is that i have heard this happening so many times before from Jessops. They are taken out and "played with" by the staff. If its like 20 shots though, id keep the memory card and not worry about it  If its more then that, then id take it back (without the memory card in ;) ) and say that there have already been shots taken on it as the count didnt start from 0001

Mike

Image count is 8 so I'll give them that for the 4gb card...

Hum - 4gb memory card, raw only 187 shots.

Time for some 8gb cards after next pay day I think

How does that work, the voltages will be totally different?

Having a joke mate :p

Yes a very big generalisation. I'm very intelligent, I'll have you know!

Not cool! It's a shame that some stores do that. Whenever we open up a box, we always tell the customer that it has been opened and offer a small discount, OR we offer them to get a brand new one ordered in. I got my 40d ordered in from warehouse, and I work in the store! I say don't ever accept one that's been opened for a price you'd pay for something new. Haggle it down to get a reasonable amount off. Usually it's a £5 for stuff under £100, £10 for stuff up to £200, and about £20 thereafter. It's all dependant on the trade price we have on our system.

The voltages are fine - the only thing he's suggesting is that you use something like a 2600mAh set of batteries (or even better a 4000mAh set like the ones I've just got hold of for a special project) since this is an indication of how long they're going to last.

A cheap 500mAh or 1000mAh rechargable will drain pretty quickly so it's worth investing in the batteries.

All due respect mate, I think the way you've phrased 'played with' is unfair.

We are expected by every man and his dog to know cameras inside out. I use all the cameras in our store extensively, to get a feel, to develop an understanding, and so that I don't look like one of your stereotypical 'Jessops idiots' when demoing a camera to a customer.

Haha I don't think anyone understood my 'forum sarcasm' :p

See this would of made me really mad. When I was 16 i worked at Marks and spencer and a customer asked for Hovis bread,I was adament we didn't sell it- "sorry but we only sell own brand products" I repeated however to my shock we did. However if you work in a shop especially such a specialised one such as photography you should know things like that., especially the manager! If the assistant was new then fair enough but no excuse for the manager, I would of really had a go.

That's all very well, but that doesn't excuse resealing the box and selling it as new.

No, I know, I didn't say it did. If you'd have read my earlier post you'd have seen that.

The way I interpreted what Stebbings said was that the staff shouldn't use the cameras at all.

We never seal up a used camera and try and sell it as new. Not only is it illegal, it's morally wrong.

So it's okay for someone working in a supermarket/departement store to make a mistake but you'd better ready your crucifix should someone working in an electronics store make a mistake?
