There are questions every so often about people trying out RAW editing for the first time, but finding problems when either they haven't installed the Adobe Camera Raw plugin for Photoshop CS or Photoshop Elements, or when they have, find that their computer still doesn't recognise the RAW file from their camera. In the latter case, the version of Photoshop CS or Photoshop Elements, and the version of ACR available may not be new enough to include their camera.

There is a way of making any camera's RAW files compatible with the latest version of ACR, and that is to convert your RAW files to DNG files using the Adobe DNG Converter software, which can be downloaded from Adobe here for Windows and here for Macs.

The DNG Convertor can increase the file sizes as the converter 'wraps' your RAW files with some 'coding' to make it compatible with ACR if you choose to keep the original RAW file as part of the new file. Files sizes could end up smaller if you choose not to keep the original RAW file as part of the DNG. You only need convert to DNG if you have a version of CS or Elements whose latest version ACR plug in is not able to read your cameras files, and you don't wish to, or are unable to upgrade.

The Adobe Camera Raw plugin can also be downloaded from the same links above. Make sure that you download the latest version of ACR compatible with your version of Photoshop CS and/or Photoshop Elements.

Below is only a rough guide to Adobe Camera Raw and the compatible versions of Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements. There are slight version differences between Mac and Windows versions of Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements.

Feel free to point out any errors. ;)

Really useful post! Hopefully the mods will make this a sticky and we'll get less questions.

Problem: opening nef files in CS2. Previously no problem with my Nikon D70s, and ACR 3.7. Now I'm using a D300s and that doesn't work anymore. I found an old thread advising downloading Adobe's dng converter version 4.3, which I did, but still no joy. Reason: 'There was an error parsing the file'.

Does anybody have the solution for this, without my upgrading to CS3?

Thanks.

I think the DNG converter is not linked to a version of CS or Elements so you download the latest version to convert your RAW files. The converter needs to be updated to be able to convert newer cameras RAW files the same as ACR.

DNG converter 4.3 was an update for the D300, amongst others, not the D300s.

The latest version of the Adobe DNG Converter is 5.6 update and can be downloaded from the link in the first post of this thread.

Hope that works for you. :)

Hi,

Yes I tried that last night: downloaded 5.6, however it doesn't install. The installer launches alright but double-clicking doesn't do it. I don't know why. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hello again,

Actually I've got a Mac (10.3.9). I've been searching online for a solution, and I'm wondering if anybody uses Bibble successfully with D300s NEFS and CS2?

Kitty

That is quite an old OS, so it may not be supposrted, it should say on the download page (I can't check because I'm on works PC and Adobe directs me to the Windows version).

Right. I have a Canon 400D and i use Adobe Photoshop 6.0

Looking at the list i need update 3.6, but this is only compatible with photoshop 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

The first update for photoshop 6.0 is update 4.3.1, but does not list the 400D.

Am i being thick? Or are the updates backward compatible?

If you have 'Photoshop 6' then I don't think you can use Adobe Camera Raw, if it is Photoshop Elements 6 however, ;) then you can install up to Adobe Camera Raw version 5.5. Always install the latest version compatible with your Photoshop/Elements as there are improvements to ACR as well as just making the software compatible.

All the cameras are supported in the previous versions from top to bottom. It was easier to add the cameras that have been made compatible for each version, than to do a complete list for each version.

So each new version has compatibility for all the cameras that are listed before that version. :)

Hi

I have been searching for some time to find an answer to a problem I have with CS2. I am trying to find the correct plug-in to use to convert RAW images taken with a Nikon D40x. Looking at your first post in this thread I see I may be getting close to an answer but I note that version 4.0 is not compatible with CS2 but that is where the Nikon D40x first appears. It is not listed with version 3.7 but I am hoping you can tell me that if I do upload 3.7 I will be able to view my RAW images in CS2. I would very much appreciate a response as I am now a brand new member of this site and really need some advice here. Just to let you know an upgrade of either Photoshop or the camera is out of the question for some time.

Thanks in advance

Maggie

From the list, it looks like you will be unlucky. ACR version 4 is the first update that includes the D40X, and that is not compatible with CS2.

You could convert your files using the latest DNG converter (increasing file sizes) from Nikon RAW NEF files to DNG files, and use the ACR v3.7 plug in. In theory, as it is not something I have had to do. ;)

It would be the only way to be able to work with D40X RAW files without updating Photoshop to at least CS3.

There are free RAW conversion software such as Rawtherapee which will convert D40X files btw. There may be others too.

Thanks for letting me know.

Okay, my next question is which DNG converter would automatically convert all pics so that they will be on view when I open them up in Bridge?

Hope you can help

Thanks again

Maggie

Unless you are embedding the original RAW file the DNG will actually be smaller ;)

hi, I've just installed PSE 7 on my new Windows 7 (64 bit) Dell and have replaced the ACR with 5.5 and can open all images, including my CR2 files from my Canon 50d. Although I can edit them with ACR from within PSE the thumbnails are all just greyed out images. Am I missing a vital piece of the puzzle to get this working properly ? :crying:

Cheers

Joan

The latest version of ACR, v5.7, has been released and can be found here.

Apart from some new camera support, it includes an updated demosaic algorithm designed to provide compatibility with settings applied in Lightroom 3 apparently.

Hi Joan,

Sounds very much like you have the same problen as I do,
can't see RAW or in my case NEF thumbnails.

I'm fairly sure that I have found the answer, for NEF anyway.

I like you have just upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit and that's where the problem lies.

Nikon do not do a NEF codec for Windows 7 64 bit, only 32 bit.

Do Canon do a 64 bit codec, if so it's that that you want, I think.

Upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit, that's a laugh. PSE9 worked perfectly with XP SP2....Ho-hum.
