It has come to my attention that this question has been asked a zillion times... These are the prices I've found (roughly) for Nikon and Canon camera bodies only. Don't forget, batteries, lenses, tripods etc will all run your budget up higher!

Top-Tip:Try before you buy! See how the different bodies feel in your hands - it DOES matter!

NOTE: These prices are not set in stone - just a rough guide to give you a start! You may get what you're after for less, or it might cost more!

I have no real knowledge of Pentax/Sony/Olympus etc gear, so if anyone wants to run up something similar(y)

Bodies only remember. First price is used on eBay, second is new according to camerapricebuster.co.uk, 3rd column is MegaPixel count.

Good idea!

Maybe try a bigger/bolder seperation between the 2 prices, and a tiny blurb below the camera?

i.e. megapixels, frames per second, features (eg. sensor cleaning), sensor size (i.e. cropped sensor?)

Perhaps it would be a good idea to add some lenses to the bunch, at least 18-55 or likes of those. Almost everyone buys one of those.
Adding a note what how zoom, focal length and FOV are related might not be a bad idea either. Although it might be a subject for another thread which should become sticky and should be stickified on the front page too.

All good ideas, but it's just supposed to be a quick price guide, not a mini-review:) Gives an idea of what to go look at for your money...

I have added pixel-count, but we all know it's not how many of them you have, it's what you do with them;)

Don't forget to add these

Fujifilm S5 Pro Digital SLR Body £683.99
Sony A100 + 18-70mm Lens Kit £389.99
Sony Alpha A200 + 18-70mm Lens Kit £399.00
Sony Alpha A700 + 18-70mm Lens Kit £899.99
Pentax Pentax K10D + 18-55mm Lens £449.99
Pentax Pentax K100D + 18-55mm Lens £349.99
Sigma SD14 Body £664.05
Samsung GX-10 Lens Kit £434.94

OK, im prob going to sound stupid here. Im brand new to slr's, seen this mentioned a few times. I was just wondering what it is :wacky:

Don't worry, I was the same, but you will soon learn.

It is the size of the sensor which will change the affective zoom of your lens. Ie a 18-250 lens would be 29-400 on a 400D. (1.6x Crop)

Hey I just spotted you are another snechie! :)

hmm im still lost, i will search for a thread about it, theres bound to be one. Thanks for your help my fellow scots
