Since webpages display images at 72DPI/PPI (or the myth goes - apparently most screens support webpages with a much denser PPI these days), surely that's not true. If an image is less than 72PPI, would it not be reduced in quality? I couldn't tell the difference on my 1080P monitor, though.

I haven't used Flickr properly in a while.
I'm resizing my images to 1200 x 1200px. They look great in Photoshop, pin sharp, but not over the top. I upload them to flickr and this is the result that I get:

Busy week, just registered as self-employed amongst having a million other things going on! I haven't managed to come up with anything decent at all for bubble... I had some terrible attempts with bubble-wrap. I'm sick of only having my phone camera! Hopefully I'll be able to come up with...
I like your close entry. Nice contrast, dof and sharpness, with plenty for my eye to explore. For your doggy, however, I really think the focus should be on his eyes!

I orientated it that way to (hopefully) give it a stronger composition. If I were to have it landscape, I would want a bit more of my head, above my eyebrow, cropped off (but instagram, of course, only lets you square crop).
