Beginner Well, Hats off to all you pro Togs

I have to say that despite the hard work it made a decent change from writing design documents. And the day rate was my normal rate so not too shabby. Mind you, I suspect a Pro would have charged quite a bit more  But probably more valuable to me was the portrait experience. I should...

    Vulcan XH558

Correct. Many components on aircraft are 'Lifed' as in they have a finite life for safety reasons. With XH558 it's mostly about the wing spar which is the main spar supporting the wings and keeping them true against the fuselage, and of course the engines. I know little about turbines but as an...

    Red Kites over Harewood

Such beautiful birds, captured very well indeed. Number 2 is my favourite. I see these every day on my commute down the M40 although when driving I can't take photographs. Gets the Rozzers all emotional does that. And to think, 30 years ago these were very rare indeed.

Beginner Well, Hats off to all you pro Togs

Honestly, I don't know how you do it. Much respect I have after today. So the context is that I was asked to photograph 300 staff at work. I'm an amateur outdoor guy, not portraits or close up stuff. I did some a couple of months back but this was the larger office in England and to be brutally...

    BOLLARDS!

Oh I do like that, especially the 2nd one. It's subtle tones and the strong subject just appeal to me. I think the B&W suits it well. It actually reminded me of this a little......also quite subtle.

I need a new router. What's best at present?

Yes, which is why I suggested the plus. It's physics really that firmware isn't going to solve. The standard model has only 2 aerials which was fine in single band wireless days but is not fine with dual band. Some others suffered the same issues, notably the 2-Wire things which several ISPs...

I need a new router. What's best at present?

Yes, anything the ISP gives away free is usually worth exactly that amount of money to be frank. But, if you want to spend less than the Draytek, the D-Link is getting good reviews. Now I haven't tested this personally but peers and colleagues who do use it say it's very good and the wireless...

I need a new router. What's best at present?

Yeah, but I'll bet you're better with a camera than me ;) Dual band wireless. 2 simultaneous wireless signals. Newer stuff tends to do both but 5GHz is handy for smartphones etc. Not essential but nice to have for future proofing. Voice over IP has been around a while and this router can...

I need a new router. What's best at present?

The one I supply most of at the moment is a Draytek Vigor 2860n+. The non voice model (no V in the model name) comes with 3 aerials and does dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) wi fi with good range. It doesn't do the newer Wireless AC spec though, only 54 or 108 meg throughput. Draytek also make range...

"Because one day I'll upgrade to full frame"

I freely admit to being a very long way off "A good photographer" and all the poor results I get are a direct result of me not understanding something or other yet. But that said I went full frame, not for the sensor size per sé but for the newer technology. Not that my old D200 was particularly...

    Beginner f numbers.

As I understand it you can only get the higher F number (5.6) when using the longest extent of the zoom. If you wind the lens in to 18mm the F stop should come down to 3.5. Regards Dom.

Windows 8 or wait for 10

Precisely. Not a lot of change. 7 works on the existing hardware and doesn't require re-training of the whole workforce. But it is supported and patched. That's what companies like 'cos it keeps cost down.

Windows 8 or wait for 10

It's the drill down to what you want feature which makes infinitely more sense than screens of randomly placed tiles I reckon. I use RHEL on servers at work, Windows 7 on the desktop at work and I have a Macbook Pro 15 at home which I swore at for about 4 weeks before I loaded Windows-7 on it...

Beginner Photographing staff at their desks

Well, I thought I'd report back. Having consumed the advice I bought a flash diffuser from e-blag (a fiver inc delivery) and used the SB400 on camera with a 60mm F2.8 Nikkor lens. ISO 800, white balance set for flash, F2.8, 1/250th and manual focus. The above I got from experimenting with my...

    My MK6 Fiesta ST

No. 5 for me. The pallet stacks add some interest without detracting from teh main subject. Oh, and looking at the paintwork on the car I'm guessing you might be a member on Detailingworld ??
