Critique My first pregnancy shots... and portraits of non family #4 EDITED + 1 added

I think the ones in the wood are a little underexposed, need a softer look - wider aperture, and I think some colour as they just look a bit hard. A dark red/ maroon cardigan over her shoulders/ upper arms would have really helped I think. Also the angles are a bit hard on her face - and seeing...

Shooting TTL at f1.4 or should I use f8

I didn't know HSS went above 1/250? You can turn down the flash whilst in TTL by pressing the flash button on the front of the camera and dialling up to minus 3.

    Before the party

I think the first is cropped too tight, the second needs to be cropped closer, the last two, try cropping a bit off the bottom. Look into the rule of thirds as I think it would help these pics.

    ND filters for portrait

Does anyone use Nd filters for outdoor portraits in bright sunlight when using flash? Just thinking if it is bright, max sync speed is 1/320 and for a shallow DOF I would use a wide aperture. All good when I can find shade etc. but not always possible for family shots with my 3 year old! Just...

    trying to get background blury

Was there a reason for ISO800? Maybe try ISO100 and a slightly lower shutter speed. Was it windy? Are you handholding or using a tripod? If quite close you may need a reasonable aperture to get it all in focus. Just some ideas for sharpness. And as others have said, light is sooo important,

First timer with RAW on a MAC with iphoto - Help please

Wanted to add that you can probably set your camera to take each photo as RAW+JPEG. Uses more card/ computer space but quicker to email or print straight from jpeg version.

Best way to learn Adobe PS Elements

I want to learn more about post-processing as currently just use iPhoto. I have bought a copy of PS Elements but don't really know where to start!! Is it better to just have a play around with it or are there are any good (short) courses to learn the basics?

    first time baby/child photos

I have a 2 year old. I would say that be prepared to take your time, try to avoid making the older child pose. You'll have to just pick your moment. If you can get some photos of the baby asleep, focusing on the details - facial features, feet, hands, are good. Lots of "soft" like a soft plain...

I want to learn how to become a great portrait photographer

I love doing portraits, and have learnt loads by doing stock photography. Some sites have great critique forums and will point out (in very blunt terms) what is wrong and how to improve a shot. I know there is a forum here too, although I find it to be a bit too "nice"! You don't need to hire...

    Nikon SB700 battery chamber door

Has anyone else had a broken battery door on their speed light? If so, do you know what tool you need to replace the door? Looks like a phillips screwdriver would work but it doesn't, so am thinking there must be a special tool.....

Other Macro Show us your macro rig

Just stumbled across this brilliant thread! I have just got a Tamron 90mm Macro for my D7100, I have a SB700 (currently door-less though!) and have seen some amazing shots here! Loving the DIY diffusers! My OH laughed at my yoghurt pot diffuser for the on-board flash that I had to use whilst...

Advice on motion blur when photographing model

I think its something like double the focal length? So with my 50mm I wouldn't shoot handheld less than 1/100. Although tbh I shoot a bit faster because I need more practise with my handheld technique.
