I'm sorry if this is like a what camera body type question but I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I have just been offered one of the above SSDs to replace an OCZ Vertex 512GB SSD which fritzed on me within warranty - OCZ are no more as a company and there is no 1:1 replacement. At the moment I'm back on standard Sata HDD for my Mac OS and applications.

My gut says the Samsung based on read/write speeds and size but I haven't had chance to scour the internet (and the last time I did that I picked the Vertex and look where that left me ! :D )

The alternative is to get my money back and stick with the HDD but I am missing the speed boost I enjoyed while it was working...

I'm all ears... and thanks in advance.

I use Samsung SSD's in all my systems now, cant beat them for reliability in my honest opinion

On the limited, but unanimous recommendation, I have gone for the Samsung. Might be here over the weekend if not then after Easter. Will be good to get back my fast booting, and application launching system :D

Just bought a crucial m500 480gb - read is 500mb and write is 400mb. I have tested it in my mac and it achieves the published speeds.

Very pleased with it

I got a similar experience as you have, trying to chose which of the SSD to buy. I read in three or four different computing magazines, there were reviews and tests that includes the Samsung 840 Evo, Samsung 840 Pro, and the Crucial M500. In two of the magazines, the 840 Evo came out at the top, followed by the 840 Pro, in another magazine the M500 came out at the top. You know, the magazines' own "Star buy", "Best buy", "Top Choice" labels and all that?

You could consider the 840 Evo as your first choice and the M500 as a secondary choice, then worry about costs and where you can get one, I figure we've done all the homework we need to do on speeds, read speed, write speed, number of read/write, etc, now all that is left to do is worry about costs, reliability, warranty, ease of installation, and such.

Thanks for all of your replies...

Where to get and how much isn't an issue for me. This is a replacement for a faulty OCZ and so I'm not paying, and I have to get it from the retailer I bought the OCZ from. I'm hoping that installation for me is as simple as bolting onto the sled I took the old one out of and reconnecting the cable ! :D
