dial coating

Hi.. I have a Canon 5d which I haven't used for a year or two, but got it out recently and found that the rubberised coating around the top dial is coming off and is a bit sticky when I touch it. I've heard of this before but does anyone know if there's a way to stop it. I've tried cleaning it...
