Got a works do to a karting even coming up and want to use it as an excuse to try new things, I am hoping that where the speeds will be slower but be able for a few nice "action" shots. Can anyone give some beginners tips to this type of photography?

Light is bound to be fairly low, so slow speed panning shots will probably be a safe bet.

You might find the light is also a funny colour and autoWB might struggle, try your preset WB's based on what you think is the most prominent light and if they aren't looking like what you see then take a reading.

Gonna be out doors about 6pm (late July so hoping should still be "daytime")

In that case forget what I said

First thing I'd do is find a safe place to get down to the racers level to really get into the action and take it from there.

If anything, its actually harder to shoot carts than it is something going a lot faster.

The slower the subject, the slower you need to set the shutter speed to to get a sense of speed.

I'd start down at 1/60 and see what you can do....
