Hi all, I took basketball pics at London Lions vs Manchester Giants at the weekend.
I would appreciate any feedback as I'm looking to improve my sports shots as much as possible.

Thanks for looking!

1) Pre-game, I would normally aim to capture a dunk zoomed in a lot closer but was trying to capture something a little different to mix things up.

I think you've gone long enough without a reply. ;)

I see what you're trying with 1 but not sure it works.

I prefer the close shots yet the background is too sharp. I think you need a longer focal length so the subject stands out more. I notice you used the 24-70 at 46mm for one of them.

Nothing wrong with the lens though - the slats in the ceiling show up a treat!

Colours maybe a tad garish.

I like 3 but you need to see more of the attacking player - unfortunately the blue guy has blocked too much.

4 is good - will it crop in further to get just the 2 players?

Hopefully you'll get a few more responses now!

Andy

Thanks for the feedback!

I agree with your comments on shot 3, it would have been a stronger shot with more of the attacking player in. I was shooting for London Lions (blue team), if I was shooting for the attacking side I'd probably have binned the image!

I had originally tried cropping pic 4 but I wasn't too happy with the quality of the image after the crop so settled on the current composition.

I went to another game at the weekend, and tried using longer focal lengths as you suggested. The results are below.

The colours are still quite loud :) will try a more toned down edit later.

Thanks for sharing them mate, I prefer the second set personally, 6, 9 and 10 would be my picks.

I'm shooting Basketball for the first time this weekend, at the new Emirates Arena in Glasgow, got any tips for me :)

Thanks for the comments.

Dave, good luck shooting at the weekend! I look forward to seeing some of your pics! I've just been looking through your flickr stream. I don't think I've got any tips that you wouldn't already know! :)

The only thing I can say is my favorite spot to shoot from is the corner. Shooting underneath the basket gets some great shots, but I've missed a lot of key moments as the refs often block my field of view when I'm shooting there.

Thanks Andy, it went quite well, will post a few of them up on Flickr later.

Some nice shots in there, I like the colours as they are ;)

Some old faces from the past too :D
