Number one works me Steve but I'd clone the post out at the front, number two falls into the overcooked category for me, but HDR takes many forms and it is somewhat Marmite. I think it has potential if you crop it to a letterbox pano and lose a lot of grass and a little sky.

Ditto, except that I wouldn't have thought of cloning out the post which I think is a good idea.

For me the purpose of taking a photograph is to produce something that I like - and I don't think that I have yet seen a HDR photo that I really, really like.

Maybe it is a solution is search of a problem.
 
First one definitely works better for me too :)

Although I would be interested to see how a different crop or B&W version of the second could work
