As title what good books do you recommend for the beginner that breaks down everything into workable chunks which you can follow through and experiment along the way?

both really, trying to find example of how to acheive certain types of photos with specific settings.

The Scott Kelby Digital Photography Books volume 1-4 do what you want, ie show a picture and the way you get it. The earlier ones are better in my opinion.

I got volume 4 for 1p via Google Books ;) Vols 1-3 I bought paper copies of.

Pretty sure there are Kindle versions available.

Check the Kindle app for iPad. I'd also recommend any of Michael Freeman's titles, as they're very accessible for photographers of all levels, and cover both technical and creative considerations. The Photographer's Eye is a good one to start with.
