Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey

A permit in order to photograph graves, never knew you needed one. Can you not just say your photographing a family grave if challenged ?

My wife & I have been intimidated whilst carrying cameras in Brookwood Cemetery and been challenged as described in the Trip Advisor review below, it was not a nice experience to the point where she insisted on returning home.

There are many famous people buried here and some famous for the wrong reason (i.e. murderers) and during WWII the Americans buried there servicemen who were executed at Shepton Mallet (Somerset) for Rape and Murder (these men were exhumed after WWII and transferred to Plot "E" in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in France with all others executed throughout Europe, Plot "E" is NOT open to the public. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oise-Aisne_American_Cemetery_Plot_E

There are many interesting images from Brookwood to be found using Google and yes a permit was/is required as some other privately owned Victorian Cemeteries.

Hi
I realise I'm replying to an old thread here, but I have some information on this subject that may be of interest to others.
I travelled down from Scotland this week specifically to do some photography at Brookwood, and was somewhat dismayed when I saw the "Strictly No Photography" signs on the noticeboard. However, I then saw on the cemetery's website that photography was allowed with a permit, issued by the cemetery office. This morning I went to the cemetery office and asked for a permit. The nice lady I met there said that they no longer issued permits, and anyone was free to take photographs in the cemetery. I ended up spending about three hours there and got some great shots.

Thanks for the info Mark, I will see if the "Boss" will try again, if it ever stops raining.

I have contacted Brookwood Cemetery re: a photography visit and thought the reply may be of Interest to others.

Hi

From your website your Rules and Regulations page states:

In the interests of all visitors and staff, we will not permit anyone to:

• undertake filming or photography without prior authorisation from the Cemetery Manager

Any person who fails to meet these reasonable standards of conduct will be asked to leave the site immediately and also may be subject to civil or criminal action.

I assume that this refers to "Professional Photographers" and not amateurs/hobbyists.

Kind regards

Dear Mr H

Thank you for your email. We do require any photographer to make us aware of their intensions on site whether professional or amateur. I have no problems with photos taken but they should not be used for publicity.

Hi Avril

Thank you for your reply.

Does "We do require any photographer to make us aware of their intensions on site" mean a visit to your office or will an e-mail stating our intensions do and if so will an acknowledgement be required before our visit.

Kind regards
