So I shot these last spring/summer near the Pilgrims Way on the North Downs in Surrey. Went for a walk with my 5dii and 100mm macro. For a while I wasn't seeing anything to inspire me so I plonked myself down in the long grass and attuned to my surroundings. eventually I focussed in on a thistle and thought I wonder what hangs out on thistles. Canadian thistle gall flys. Urophora cuspidata - Or Urophora Carduis thats what.

And then this little guy was in the vicinity as well so he got in on the action too. :)

Thats a lovely coloured fly and what great eyes it has, well spotted and nice shots, imo the 3rd shot is best as its a lower perspective.

Thanks Graham. I agree re the perspective on the 3rd shot. Though I personally like the 2nd for the dof and detail on its thorax. Their eyes are amazing though aren't they.

That's a nice set of images Will, those things sure have some lovely colours in there eyes. Out of all of the shots I prefer #2 mainly for the extra detail.(y)

George.
