Canon 400d viewfinder display problems

Dont know if this is the right place to post this question.

I just bought a cheap 2nd hand Canon 400d as a backup. All seems to be working except the viewfinder display does not show the speed/ f stops / flash etc. ( The yellow part in the pic )
Anyone come accross this before and know a fix or do I send it back. Cant see anything on a google search. Tried removing both batteries and upgraded to latest firmware.

Is viewfinder information (can't remember the exact wording) enabled in custom functions?

Cant see that in custom functions. There are 11 option none of which mention the viewfinder display. Also reset all custom function setting to default. All the functions and settings show on the LCD display on the back of the camera, just not in the viewfinder. The 9 point autofocus leds light up ok as well.

There's a note referring to viewfinder information being turned off at the bottom of page 106 in your user guide.....it may be relevant.
