Canon kit lens problem

Yes
I have a Canon kit lens 18-55mm about 18 months old
It has just recently started to fail me on taking shots.
Sometimes when I hold down the shutter release half way ready for my shot, it will refuse to go all the way down to activate.
this does not happen all the time, maybe 75%, but it is infuriating when the shot is composed and then it does not take.
If I focus at the very end of 55mm it works fine. This only happens on the kit lens, not on any others.
I have cleaned the contacts with a camera cleaning fluid with a cotton bud, but still it refuses to actuate.
Any ideas ??

Presumably you're not trying to take the shot while the focus confirmation light is blinking? I've tried to do that a couple of times without noticing and what happens is exactly what you're describing.
Other than that - not a clue. Sorry.

I wish it was that simple Jan, but no ........ As I said, it only happens with this one lens

Problem is probably the ribbon cable in the lens, they fracture and this often shows up as intermitent fault, shutter wont fire, eventually this will show err99.
