1st shot does nothing for me I'm afraid mate but that 2nd shot is spot on, very nicely done - loving the letterbox cropping, processing & composition. Very nicely done

Most was done in camera raw - brought the black level up a bit so they would stand out from the background, lowered the saturation a little bit then over sharpened them in CS.

Just covered the eye in that second shot with my finger and it all looked a bit soft. That beady eye really makes the shot come alive
