I used the old 400mm 2.8 without vr on my d700 (same sensor as the d3) and got some great images, hand held it all the time I had it and at 10.5 lb in weight it's a heavy lump of glass and nearly broke my back
That's a really good image matie
Stick to my 300mm f4 now and my back can definately put up with its weight

Yeah i know exactly what you mean, its not a lot of fun walking far with it. Havae you seen that new 400 2.8 which weighs about 1.75lbs less? but also costs £10k...
