Morning all

My Daughter is getting married in Sept this year, and due to the present climate we are having to do it on a budget (same for everyone unfortunately) so what we have done is hired a professional tog for the main church to get the really important pictures for her day, the walk in the the signing of the register etc. etc. then I am going to take over and try to capture the rest of the day, I am working on the the theory that if I fire off as many shots as my memory cards will allow we will get a few nice photo's, I can use a camera on manual but Im not the best in the world and still learning each and every day.

Looking at my photo bag, what would be a good all round lens to use on my d300s, I don't want to be lugging a big rucksack around whilst trying to make speeches and chat with everyone.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Fully understand the budget issues, but a real shame you're going to be concerned about taking photos on your daughter's big day. You should be enjoying the day.

Are there any other budding photographers in your family who could do it instead of you?

You could always buy a load of disposable cameras and leave them on the tables at the reception for guests to take shots. Then just collect them up at the end of the evening and get them developed. Many people do this now and I've seen plenty of good candids and funny/entertaining shots resulting from this, not just your normal run-of-the-mill stuff.

Just an idea....

I would echo this. You really don't want to spend the day looking through a view finder. If there is anybody else at all that can step in, I would pursue that route.

I'd have thought someone learning on the forum may like to step up to learn?

To answer the question, I'd have thought a 50mm 1.4 / 1.8 would be perfectly light, quick, and mobile.

With the strap off, and just the 50mm, it wouldn't be such a burden.

see if theres someone on the forum in your local area who would like to "step up" for pure experiance, you can promise them a meal and a few drinks... and possibly a bridesmaid???

When my daughter got married a couple of years ago my friend also a photographer did the whole wedding and only charged me £200 for his time. He used my kit and just handed over the CF cards and kit at the end of the day. At that sort of price I would certainly ask around somebody will do it for a few bob.

I done 3-4 wedding last year for my friends and i charge nothing lol. I guess i'm a good mate lol.

Certainly ask/check with mates to see who willing to do it for free or little charge.

From your bag, take the 20mm and the 50mm

And may be the leica dlux.

The disposables on tables may be a good idea too.

Anyone who attends and has a camera, you can request they send you a full copy (raw or jpeg depending what they are using).

The offer of a local learner would be good - they get to learn, you get a copy of the shots. I'd direct them and organise the people that you want in the more important shots.

You'll prolly want some time to you n family too.

Hope it all works out!

I have to echo everyone's comments here, my daughter got married 2 years ago, I took my film camera (645 Minolta) shot off 12 shots and left it at that, so the day is till fairly fresh in my mind. Tbh everyone will expect you to be shaking hands, making speeches and seeing old rarely seen members of the family (yours and the SIL's), its no place to be taking loads of photos. I'd also talk it over with your daughter, does she want you to do the photos?
Its up to you obviously what you do though.
Kit wise if you are going to do the shoot, I have found an 85mm on a crop body a really nice length, good for groups as you arent in their faces and long enough to do some really nice portraits, I'd also take a 50/35 for wider shots if I had one. Fast primes would be my number one choice if I didnt want heavy zooms, zoom with feet being the order of the day I think.

Whatever you decide I hope you and your family have a great day, its not about how much you spend but how much you treasure the memories. Time we got back to sensibly priced weddings in my view (my daughter, us and the in-laws all contributed to her wedding and we didnt spend an absolute fortune, we all had a great day, possibly because the expectations were a little less than if we'd spent £20K+)
Matt

I would consider asking a friend or adopt the disposable camera approach. If you cannot resist the bug then the 18-55 on your d300s would suffice. Kit lens it may be but it does offer a lot of options. However as members have suggested, shoot only when you feel you need to. Above all this is a day for you, your daughter and family to enjoy, not for dear daddy to play tog. Have a good one (y)

Should have said he only wanted £100, but I gave him £200, for doing the cracking job he did.

I have videoed a friends and sisters wedding, and generally it did not detract from the day - actually made me feel all important!!! If it was my daughter, I would love to take pics of the day, as pics taken by me will hold more value than pro ones if that makes sense!!! Obviously I would not do that at church like you, but would love to do this at the reception etc...

Primes are nice, and my 50mm is a beauty, but you cant beat the Nikon 24-70 for this. Its almost as good as a prime, and a great lens. Use this a lot on my D300. You can hire these from lenses for hire on here, and I would strongly suggest that.

I've done a couple of weddings for friends who were on a short budget. I did it for free, as a sort of wedding present, and the parties concerned were very happy with the results. The second one was needed as the togs card corrupted and he lost a load of shots from the afternoon. I'd of offered to do it had I been nearer but Swindon's a fair walk for me.
There's one good thing about being behind a camera all day is you don't end up in front of it while making an idiot of yourself doing "dad dancing" while drunk, and no hangover either!

Same situation for me. My daughter is getting married later this year, and whilst they will be using a pro photographer for the formal shots, I'm going to be doing the informal / candid shots. Think there may be disposable cameras as well.

Shame - you should all be enjoying the day but I do understand, good luck!

I am another who thinks as the Father of the Bride you may not have time to actually take that many photos.

I got married a couple of years ago (fairly small family only thing with 86 guests in total), my Dad barely had chance to drink as he was socialising that much with our family and meeting my husbands family and friends too.

It isn't clear from your OP if the pro is sticking around for the speeches or not. If not, it would be difficult for you to get the nice shots of the speeches if you have a formal seating plan.

I have shot my sister in laws wedding and doing another for another SIL later this year, this was fine for me as I am not an important part of the day so can easily do what I need to do without being too rude; but being Father of the Bride is an important part of the wedding and it could just be difficult to do it all.

Tony, give me a date and if it fits with me, I will come down with Ryan (another member on here) and do the shots after the pro has gone. We'll do the evening do (if there is one) and put ourselves up in a pub for the night.
It won't cost you a penny. I will then give you a cd with the images on and you can do whatever you wish with them.
Just give us a sausage roll and drink or something and we'll be happy. We've done a few evening does/parties and they went well!
It's a genuine offer mate. We don't want a bean. Just a sauasage roll! :D
It's your daughters wedding mate. you should be enjoying it with her. The day goes fast!!

What a thoroughly nice chap you are, Kevin. A bit of a liberty asking for a sausage roll but still...

Top man Kev...(y)

Stuff like this is what makes this place so great. Good on you!

Just seems the obvious solution. Tony gets photographs, we get a big boys weekend away! :D
I just hope it's not Sept 1st or 14th. I'm away both weekends. :|

Hi Kev, Ive just chatted to my daughter and she is getting married at St Catherines church, Matson Lane, on the 22/09/2012 at 14.00 hrs (2.00 PM to us) and the reception is being held at St Bridge Rugby Club, which I belive is also in Matson.

If these dates are not convenient or you are busy please do not worry it was the thought that counts and its such a kind offer, it renews my faith in people, and thank you again sir.

Just to avoid confusion its Saintbridge not St Bridge. I had the displeasure of going to school there. Not quite in Matson, but close enough. And it's St Katharine church

I would offer to shoot also, but I'm rubbish at people, I prefer things that don't move.
