I'd like to see more of the sun - classic situation where a proper telephoto would have been ideal to isolate the area of interest.

Works for me too. The light really draws the eye down the valley, which I guess is the effect you were looking for. I suspect that further into the light everything was wiped out by the glare, which would have detracted from the image.

This is one of four bracketed shots so could easily process it to retain detail in the sky through HDR.

The whitewashed houses are just shining a bit too much and could easily be subdued with a burn brush on highlights.

It looks a bit unbalanced to me, I would like to see more of the sunlight to the left of the photo.
Or crop some more of the dark right hand side and see what that looks like.
