Dragonflys can be very predictable, If you watch then for a while they usually use the same flight path over and over and at some point hover for a while, That is basically how I took these pics. All the flight images are of the same Dragonfly, he has a rip in one of his rear wings.I would wait till the hover part of his flight have the lens set to manual at max zoom and rock back and forth till the bit I wanted was in focus, Sounds complicated but is easier than it sounds.
But sometimes they just will not co-operate with you, The redtail would not hover for me and I could only get resting shots, and the bluetail.... well she was a bit busy for hovering. (Not sure her parents would approve of her being married to a greentail.)
