ERR 01 on 1X4 convertor

Can anyone explain to me why I keep getting an err 01 message on my screen, when I use my 1x4 convertor, I have tried it on another body and still the same error,

The communication between the camera and lens is faulty, I would check the contacts on the TC

I have checked the contacts and cleaned them, still getting same error

Do the camera work with just a lens attached?
What's the make of the teleconverter?

Both cameras work fine with just the lens attached, its a canon 1X4 convertor mk11, I'm using it on a Canon 500mm L mk1

Is this the first time you've used this the teleconverter or did it just stop working?
You've eliminated the cameras and the lens, so it has to be the teleconverter, you might have to have it serviced/repaired.

I bought the convertor off here second hand, was working fine then just stopped, might as well buy another one for what it will cost me to repair it.
