Harvestman

It was flash, tucked into a corner of a covered seat. Aperture should have been f20 but will need to check exif data to be sure. It was cropped a little.

OK, f/20 - that's going to give you about as much DoF as you are going to get via a small aperture. Looking again at this, I suppose part of the issue is that because we are looking at it from behind we are looking at the body at an angle of 45 degrees or so, and so the plane of focus is hardly going to touch most of the body (you can see the focus going half way up the first segment of the two front legs, and to a lesser extent up the two legs behind the front left leg). Having more of the body a bit (or even better a lot) more in focus would look good (IMO).

You might want to try taking shots of a subject at several distances if you have time before it moves and then crop them all to the view you want. You may find you can crop quite a lot and get more DoF while retaining good image quality. Even though you lose detail by cropping you may find that at normal viewing size the overall impression is of better image quality.
