After a lot of messing around I finally got the shot I was after. Image created with two stacks of six images stacked in combinez and adjusted in photoshop.

I used glycerine for the drop as water would not hold on the fly.

I put the fly in the fridge for a few minutes to cool it down which gave me a few mintues of it not moving.

The detail is fantastic, very impressive at full size. If I had to pick fault with the shot I think that the light on the droplet is a bit harsh and the background somehow looks unnatural. I know it's a staged shot and the background possibly is unnatural I just think that a green background would look better.
Having said that, I know nothing and only wish I had your patience to set up and create a shot like this. Very well done.

Interesting shot - I agree with the surreality of the background.

And had you not mentioned it was a fly, I would have had some trouble knowing it was a fly, because of the odd angle/crop/seeing only a partial fly ;)
