Ice Hockey Photography - 2013/2014 Season

Ok this is one of my shots taken last weekend. You get a good laugh off the boys. Very grainy and will need some PS work.
One thing I learnt (from Kipax I think) is not to be overly concerned about high iso or grain. You're shooting action sports, unless you're expecting to be able to print A3, then so what. You can do some post work to minimise it just to make it acceptable at the resolution you want to use the photo. There's no point in blowing up the photo to look for noise unless that's the size you expect to use it.

Duncan where did you get the hack for your 400D? and is it easy to install and use.

The hack is around on the Internet. It's quite easy to install and use. It's not perfect mind and may occasionally lock the camera up.

You install a hook first in the firmware then you must format your cf card with a system file. When the camera turns on it reads the hack software from the cf card. If you don't want to use it just format the cf card or use a different one.

It's beyond the scope of this thread really. Pm me your email address and I'll send you the info if you like.

That's not to shabby mate, quick levels in photoshop and run a denoise filter and would take it up a couple of notches. Have to concur that the sigma is a great lens for hockey shots, lucky now that the lighting in the rink was refurbed at start of the season - nice wight lights (prior to this they were horrible orange sodium ones). Can now shoot at f4 -f5 @ 1/400 iso 2500 (think!) and when get home quick contrast boast and good to go. I shoot from the players benches, but for this you need to be registered with your 'team' and also have full indemnity an public liability insurance ( In case you injure a player, or get injured yourself), the viewpoint is awesome though and well worth the very very occasional puck, glove or stick in the face :)

Thanks steelerdean for your comments, looking into new glass if there is anything you can recommend for the 400d it would be most helpful. Whats the standard resolution for uploading photos here as on other forums I have used I have had to keep them low.

Do you have a Flickr account? I find it best to upload to Flickr (which lets you throw up the full resolution shots) and put the HTML/BBCode on here. Let me know if you're interested more in this and i'll provide some more details.

I now have a flicker account, very different layout to what I remember had an account about 5-6 years ago, not very user friendly for the first time user, but am getting there. I take it I click on the image button and past link. just not sure what is appropriate size to use. have tried this and not working. the only way I can get an image to show up is right clicking it and coping url, is this correct? aaaargh!! should be so simple.

Thanks Duncan hack running, all I need is to test it out at the rink. Off to inverness this weekend so it will get a good work out with the low light at that rink.

When you've uploaded the image on Flickr, select it and in the bottom right you'll see a small picture of a box with an arrow coming out of it (it says "more ways to share" when you hover over it). Click this and one of the options in there is "Grab the HTML/BBCode". When you click on that, copy the whole of the code shown in the box and paste it in one of your replies. When you submit the reply, it will pull the picture through from Flickr. The advantage of that is as well as seeing the image on here, we can click it and it will take us to the image on Flickr where we can see all the exif data to be able to give better advice on your settings compared to what you've used.

Thanks Dean
Think I've got it now.

Off to Inverness tomorrow with a Canon 5D and a 70-200 f2.8 lens borrowed from a college at work. New toy to play with and get my head around will probable be wanting one by the time I get home.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/108588874@N07/10841695014/" title="_MG_4878 by kiwimack1, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3809/10841695014_bbf9f9b4c4.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="_MG_4878"></a>

Still no joy :(

Sorry mate, I missed a step. When you've selected "Grab the HTML/BBCode", change the radio button in there from HTML to BBCode and copy and paste the contents of the box from there. It should then look like this:-

Nice Set Dave, the last time I was at Lee valley the lighting was poor and the glass was really dirty, you've done really well, first time or not, nice one, will be looking out for your next set.

Paul.

Thanks Fozzy, did have to pick my spot with the least dirty glass but it wasn't too bad. Also, did get my tissues out and have a little clean my side of the glads lol! Lighting wasn't too bad though. Hopefully won't be too long before I can get down again.

Went to Coventry and took some pictures from the elite league. Coventry blaze V Hull Stingrays.

Nice to still see this thread continuing. Now that I'm back to being a fan instead of a photographer, I have to say that I'm enjoying my hockey more now

Excuse the thread hijack, but I've finally got round to listing my gear and starting to sell it. I thought that some of my kit might be of interest so some of you sports photographers (not only the body & lenses, but Expodisc and bags etc).

I know a few people expressed an interest in the past, so thought I'd put the link up here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/th...2-8-l-17-35-2-8-l-bags-and-other-bits.528144/

All the best and keep shooting!

hi, what will you take for expodisc 'hockey togs" rates. You know how it is, get paid nought for providing images :)

I heard that Telford local papers pay a fortune for photos, Steve :D

If you want it, you can have it for £35 and I'll even pay for the postage.

Some great photos in this thread, would like to try photographing ice hockey, it's a shame our Bristol team no longer plays in Bristol :(
