ID this little red monster?

I currently have this dude residing in my bathroom. I have found a chrysalis type thing which I suspect it has come out of. Any ideas what it is? Also, what do you think of the picture? I haven't had my Tamron 90mm for long and I'm in the very beginning of the learning stages. This was taken handheld and was a quick shot because I'm not overly keen on this, albeit interesting, bug.

My guess is a hanging fly ( 'Bittacus Tipularius' )

I'm thinking it is the Canadian Wasp - Ichneumon enicospilus?
