Saw it a few weeks ago being towed into Portsmouth naval dockyard.
You've got the better shot especially as there is a bird on the deck

I like it well caught and stitched together. colours look ok to me...

I was wondering what bird that is on deck though.

Thanks Dreamer. I did a bit of digging after your post and found something that indicatest eh F32II is replacing the Harrier

yes my mistake it is a f-35 and yes it is replacing the Harrier but i did'nt think it was going to be that quick!

The plane is only a bolted together model. I watched them putting it together in Portsmouth a few days back. They used the same model for the Meet The Navy event in July.

From the Royal Navy website

Work is underway, with the United States, to develop the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, that can fly from our smaller aircraft carriers, and that will be both stealthy and supersonic. Lockheed Martin has been chosen as the prime contractor to build the Harrier replacement with aircraft F35 which will enter service alongside with US Forces as well.

Nothing to do with the excellent picture but....

I have fond memories of this ship, well the memories are a little hazy.

Quite a few years ago when on holiday with the Bingley Rugby club in palma Nova, this ship was in dock, so all the guys were in the town, we met up with the chief petty officer, any how after quite a few drinks he invited our party on board in the morning. So 8am still slighty worse for wear we were at the side of the ship, we were escorted on board and given a full tour of the ship, and its planes, its control rooms etc. we were then taken onto a pilot boat and shown round the outside of the USS Nimits (forgive the spelling) which was moored just outside the harbour, if i remember the Illustrious is 10,000 tonnes and the Nimits was close to 100,000 tonnes, it was massive.
Once back on the ship we went into the officers mess, where they have a bar, where they serve (from what i remember) a special brew made up for the mess. my god it was strong !!!. 4 hours later and most of us walked off the ship, 2 were helped off and 1 was on a stretcher complety out of it.

I did take quite a few pictures whlist onboard, but they were film shots, so i guess i could scan them and post some on here

An amazing day, on an amazing ship

My Father served on her back in the 80's Probaly had several refits since then, but yes her & Invincible are something else. I seem to recall they are actually termed "through-deck cruisers" not aircraft carriers for some odd reason.
