Taken late last October whilst visiting Mana Pools in the Lower Zambezi Valley, Zimbabwe.

Late one afternoon we were walking along an abandoned river terrace alongside the Zambezi and paused for a while to watch a bull elephant in the far distance (~1km away) drinking from the river. Nothing at all unusual in this, just a nice scene to enjoy on a hot afternoon.

The ele then move a little closer and proceeded to have a sand bath.

He then strode purposefully in our direction. We were upwind of him, so he probably didn't realise we were there. He walked with a great swagger, tossing his head from side to side as he went.

It became clear that whether he knew we were there or not he was heading our way!

At this stage we made sure he knew we were there - there are few things worse than startling an elephant a few yards away from you when you are on foot!

He looked at us, exhaled loudly and shook his head in our general direction (now only ~20 feet away from him), his ears slapping noisily on his sides and continued on his way.

They really are fantastic, entrancing creatures....
