Two points to think about, , the first may be obvious but the second less so. (A) you have to cock the shutter first with a lever around the lens, and (b) although you don't need to have a film loaded, you do need to wind on the film advance knob a little way until a silver lever to the left of and in front of the winding knob disappears. I think this is to prevent accidental multiple exposures.
