Good morning all, thought I'd take advantage of a slow work day by asking a question about the above. I've considered one of these in the past but haven't been sure about the quick release plate side of things. I use a Manfrotto 410 Junior geared head with a 410 quick release plate.

Looking at Kirk as a starting point - would I need one of these camera plates;

...and would it sit on top of my 410 quick release plate and then the L bracket in turn mount on the camera plate?

No. That plate is instead of an L bracket - it serves the same purpose except for allowing a quick change to portrait orientation. The kirk fittings are all arca swiss type so to use one you will need an arca swiss compatible head, or change the quick release of the 410 to an arca swiss type. I changed the clamp on my 'frotto ball head using a Hejnar conversion (superb but expensive). They do one for the 410 too http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/product-p/m410f63.htm

fwiw I use a sunwayfoto L bracket (again arca swiss) on my D810, nice bit of kit and far less expensive than Kirk or RRS ...

No... you will need an arca swiss QR clamp that you can affix to your manfrotto 410 plate. The plate you linked to fits on your camera in a similar way to an L bracket.

I have a 2 inch Kirk Arca Swiss clamp that simply attaches using the mounting screw on the manfrotto plate.

Not sure what that plate is. It's not Arca.
If you go L bracket then that bolts on to your camera body. The plate has a groove along both the base and upright bit. The groove slots into the top plate of your new tripod plate and a screw tightens things up.
The top of the 410 won't take Arca. The simple solution would be to buy a cheapo Arca clamp if which there are many on Amazon or eBay. This would bolt onto the 410 qr plate. You wouldn't ever need to remove the qr plate, just unscrew the clamp.
Kirk "may" make a combined 410 qr plate and Arca clamp. They do one for the 210 system but they are pricey and hard to find.

Thanks for the responses all - clears it up a bit! I might check out the Hejnar kit PaulButler - looks good...

You could look here for conversions of your qr top plate to Arca. Not cheap!

There's a long thread here which seems to indicate that you might struggle

You could buy something as simple as this which will just bolt onto your 410 qr plate. The L bracket will fit nicely. Will look clunky!

Thanks mickledore, will check these out :)

Why not simply add something like this, after all it is all that Hejnar conversion is in reality but even buying Kirk it is half the price...

Shop around and you will find cheaper I'm sure.

I have a Kirk clamp bolted to my 410 plate with no problems, use a little bit of loctite if you worry about the over tightening or coming loose.

...thanks Phil, haven't made up my mind yet as I'm just checking out the options - I'll take a look at this too. I'm sure a cheaper option would have a higher 'waf' (wife acceptance factor!) :D

I have a chineese Arca swiss converter (cheap but does an excellant job) for my manfrotto geared head, but I'm getting one of these to use instead.

I'm hopefully getting it for Xmas and my reasoning is that is relly easy to get the geared head level, but not the tripod, therefore with the panning adaptor I can take multiple panoramic shots turning the adaptor rather than trying to get the tripod setup level and using the head to pan.

Hope that makes sense.

Pete
