Guess it depends on your budget and which lenses you have.

Re filters, the best would likely be a Canon 250D or 500D. The 250 works best with shorter lenses and the 500 with longer -- think the split is somewhere around 70mm focal length. Longer lenses are often easier to work with, though these often have larger filter ring sizes thus pushing up the price of the filter itself.

These are probably the easiest way to get started and can give nice results, although a dedicated macro lens would be better.

There are other options but these tend to be more awkward to use and/or are more suited to more specialist macro work.

There's a macro tutorial that might be worth a look in the tutorial section.

thanks acs going to read the tut and try to understand it a bit more thanks for your help

Another cheap option is to get a manual focus lens from Ebay and an appropriate adapter. Old M42 lenses are quite a popular option and M42 to EOS adaptors can be had quite cheaply. I am currently using a Prakticar Pentacon 50mm f2.4 with a B mount to EOS adaptor (about £15 with focus confirm chip and £5 without) and a set of Kenko macro tubes.

I also have a Carl Zeiss 135mm f2.8 on a B mount coming in the post to give me a bit more working distance. This lens can generally be picked up on Ebay for about £30 or less. Cheapo macro tubes will be fine if you are not concerned about focus confirmation (less than £10 on Ebay).

Yet another option would be a Raynox lens adapter, particularly the DCR250. There's a fair few folk on here who use with some great results. They can be had for around £60 new but frequently appear on eBay secondhand (I picked mine up for around £30). Search on here and FlickR for DCR250 or Raynox for an idea of what they can do.
