Using a Canon 100mm Macro EF 100mm 2.8 lens.
Dusted this off recently but struggling to get results I am pleased with.
Should I be able to achieve better results with this lens?
Taken @ 1/160. f11 ISO160 using Canon 650D

Short answer, yes. Longer answer :-
To me it looks as though you may have been inside the minimum focal distance, hence the lack of clarity.
However, by no means perfect, but with a little levels adjustment and a sharpen via USM ( in Photoshop) there is a little more detail to be had.

Can I ask what settings you used in USM for this?

I can't remember exactly, but I started ( normally start) with a radius of 1.5px and move the amount slider until it "looks right"
And no halo's.
