From my first trip out (to the zoo) with the 100-400 and the new 40d. I'm a happy bunny, me.

Great set, the lens is working well. I can count the hairs in the chins of the giraffe and the mandrill. I think I prefer #4 as you seem to have had more difficult conditions to cope with and you've still got a great expression on the animal's face. Colour, compositon and DoF great throughout.
 
Good for a first trip. Think the last one could do with a bit of a contrast boost but you've caught the character of all the subjects well.

Thank you all for the comments, number 4 nearly got chucked because the lower half of the pic was badly fogged by a small branch or something, but I decided to have a bash at tiding it up in PS and eventually got something worth keeping.
I'm finding the better AF and higher shutter speed of the 40d alone worth the upgrade from the 400d, and this rig is certainly doing wonders for my biceps!!
