As you say, that first bird had some seriously red 'hair' - must have recently had it re-dyed .
I don't have a garden, so these were taken out in the nearby forest. It's quite a lottery trying to get close to anything out there, as I don't use a hide or any kind of 'bait'. In this case, I saw the first woodpecker go to investigate that hole in the tree and waited in case it came back (which it did, 20 mins later). The other photo (although also quite heavily cropped) was just a case of sneaking up on the bird whilst it was busy hammering (I guess they must be so deafened by that that they wouldn't hear any footsteps ).
I agree that the first picture is certainly the better one. Here are three more of that same bird. In two of them, you can see a little of the pink, flecked chest, which distinguishes the middle size bird so easily from the larger species .
