Nick, those are strong lines in the sky and along the riverbank supporting and escorting the large building into the third point..almost...
quite a good mood shot conveying loneliness

Yes I agree there is, I intend another shoot there soon so I think I will retake rather than reprocess

The tones are a bit flat, and there is quite a bit of haloing where you have tried to lift the abbey.

This is the classic view of the abbey - I have a copy of Edwin Smith's version taken in 1954, have just held it up to the screen and would say that he was about half a pace to your right!

Hang on, here it is at Chris Beetles. You will enjoy the price, together with the fact that his version isn't necessarily better than yours!

Provided you took this shot in raw, I can't see why some work on the processing shouldn't make it sing.

To be honest Toby I took this picture the very first time I EVER used a DSLR

I processed it not long after when I wasn't really sure what I was doing with that either and then recently turned it mono from the colour edited image with no further work

I think I may have a play at a reprocess taking the image back to the start just for the hell of it to see what I can do with the totally untouched RAW file with a bit more know how

Perhaps some selective sharpening on the abbey itself could be good now, perhaps a slight lift to the mid-white tones in the sky, certainly a better edit.

Do you use PS, Nik?

The conversion was in Silver Efex Pro Toby

I also edit with LR5 and CS6

OK, maybe a bit of structure on the abbey using a control point in SFX, or the same + focus with Sharpener Pro, or you could perhaps use the history brush in CS6 on a new layer with a combo of Soft Light and Screen at say 3-10% and paint in some subtle luminosity and contrast on the stonework.
