Motorway trail lighting

This was taken just using my kit lens. Can anyone please suggest how to reduce the over exposure / flair of the distant headlights? Is it because they are shining into the lens?

Yes, the headlights from that "hotspot" look like they were pointing right at the camera.
Probably the easiest way around it is to find a viewpoint that avoids the problem.

Great effect, seen this sort of thing before, how do you achieve it? The blurred lights etc.
