Im thinking of ordering myself some ND filters.

am i right in thinking that ND2 is 1-stop, ND4 2-stops, and ND8 3-stops??

Also which route is generally considered best, screw into the filter thread on the lens, or the cokin square series? i know the square is more convenient if you change lenses as you only need an adaptor ring, but are they any better quality than the screw ins?

Correct about the factors. The cokin ones wont be any better quality (more neutral) than the screw in ones. But, if you're going to be using filters a lot then you are better of buying into slot in system as longterm the costs will be lower. Hitec ones from Teamwork digital are good value and good quality.

Square ND filters every time. Unless your horizon is always in the same place.

Hang on.

Square ND GRADS solve that problem.

For non-graduated ND filters, screw ins are possibly/arguably better for large stop numbers. It helps to reduce light leakage.
