While it's god a strong subject, I think it's a little dark... This detracts from the images overall effect.

I like the lighter version much better...
I took a stab at your lightened image...I think it has a lot of potential.
I lightened up some, and added some saturation, and did played with some localized contrast...
Here's an idea.
PS elements is a good... I personally like Lightroom. It may be a little more in price, but considering what people pay for camera gear, it's actually pretty cheap, I think.
