Night sports photography help

Hi. I'm just a Mom who thoroughly enjoys taking pictures of my boys and their sporting events. Now that my oldest is Varsity I've volunteered to take the team pictures. As you can see from my avatar picture I struggle to get the great shots under the lights. I've noticed the professionals using a long very large lens. None have been friendly enough to engage conversation. Perhaps they think I'm competing for business but I'm just doing the team scrapbook. Any help is very appreciated. Thanks

Fast lenses (f2-f2.8?) and high ISO (1600 upwards) values are needed.

Hi there. It would help to know what kit you have and hiw 'fast' your lens is... If you have a camera that can cope, you can push the ISO up too. I am away at the moment but will check back to see...might not be straight away.
